At the moment of this writing, much of the south is still recovering from ice and snow dumped across several states in January 2026. Actually, we’re quite upset about the whole thing. All these high-pressures and low-pressures should know that this kind of weather belongs up north. Way up north. We of the south want our normal winter temperatures back!
Make no mistake, I’m not afraid of a bit of winter weather. I lived in Colorado for a few years and trust me, snow was not scarce. Neither was extreme cold. But that’s what you expect in Colorado. Georgia, not so much.
However, cozying up with a mug of hot chocolate and a piece of peppermint bark , I found myself musing about snow (or ice) days and how joyful they are.
- Snow Days Are Family Days!
It’s the best time to have some fun. Get out that sled. (It’s back there in the garage somewhere, you’ll find it.) Build a snowman. Have a snowball fight. Come on, don’t act your age on a snow day. Think like a kid and enjoy the awesomeness of a winter wonderland. (Yeah, I talking to you my brothers and sisters of the south)
- Snow Days Are Memory Building Days
Some of my best memories as a kid in upper East Tennessee were snow days. We would bundle up for sledding at my cousin’s house. What fun we had! Our moms would have to force us inside to warm up, dry off, and rest but, it wasn’t long before we were right back at it.
Memories like these are vivid reminders of where we came from and what matters most in this life. On a snow day, take the time to build memories with your family.
- Snow Days Are For Laughter
During the two weekends our little area of the south stayed shut down due to ice and snow, I realized something special about my son. He is a master at breaking up tension and stress in our family. Just when you think you can’t take it any longer, he shows up and decides it’s time to hunt YouTube for the craziest videos. He can get us dancing to whatever silliness he finds. Don’t even think of disagreeing with him about the top ten songs of all time. Laughter abounds in these moments … on snow days.
What fun silliness can be on a snow day. No pressure, but lots of laughter. And family.
- Snow Days Are Good Eats Days
As kids, what was better after sledding until we could barely move our fingers than a hot bowl of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich? Add a few cookies or a brownie and just like that, a lifetime of “felt happiness” is built. That’s right. I believe you can feel the happiness you build. To this day, certain foods bring back a landslide of happiness in one bite.
Fill up your kitchen table with goodies to munch on throughout the day and just watch what happens.
Good things can happen over a bowl of soup on a snow day. (Even if it’s a can of Campbell’s)
- Snow Days Are Quiet Days
On the day the snow started to fall at my house, I pulled open the curtains and watched the beauty before me. Yeah, I knew it was going to wreak some havoc but, there was no denying the glorious hand of God. And such peace at watching snow fall and coverāwellāeverything.
The quiet of a snow day is the perfect time to pray, to praise, to reflect on the majesty of God and to rest in His presence.
There’s an actual weight to the silence of a snow day. Simon and Garfunkel were right, there is a “Sound of Silence”.
- Snow Days Are A Time To Remember Others
All these amazing activities and memories we enjoy on snow days should not exclude praying for those who are struggling.
If you can reach out to someone in your neighborhood who needs a helping hand, do it. If your church is taking food to people with no power, or helping someone who slid into a ditch, go be a part of that outreach.
Take these moments to teach your kids to place others above themselves. You’ll build character in them this world is lacking.
Have family prayer! Pray for those you may not be able to help yourselves, but always remember, God has a vast army of believers who are working to be Jesus’s hands and feet in times like this. Undergird them and cover them in prayer if you can’t take partāand keep that ministry in prayer at all times.
- Snow Days Are A Blessing From God
Take advantage of the time a snow day offers. Marvel at the beauty of God’s handiwork. Raise your hands and give Him praise. Love on your family and build memories that will last a lifetime!

Definitely thinking about a piping hot bowl of soup, chili, or stew now. Lol. All are wonderful, but yes, those lingering fond memories matter most. I love snow and agree, snow days truly are a blessing from God.
